The Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières (BRVM) is the shared stock exchange of the eight WAEMU countries. For a brand-new investor it can feel opaque — there are seasoned traders, a hundred acronyms, and no obvious first step. Here are the six things we recommend you do in your first week.

1. Open a trading account with a licensed broker

You cannot buy a BRVM-listed share directly. Trades go through SGI brokers — licensed intermediaries like NSIA Finance, Hudson & Cie or Impaxis. Most of them let you open an account online now. Have an ID, a proof of address, and a tax ID ready.

2. Pick an initial amount you can afford to leave alone

If you're exploring, keep your first deposit small — enough to feel the mechanics but not enough to lose sleep over a 5 % swing. We've seen too many new investors oversize their first position, panic on the first dip, and sell at a loss.

The point of your first week is to understand the plumbing, not to make money.

3. Place a tiny trade on a liquid stock

Liquid stocks (Sonatel, SGBCI, Ecobank) will fill at the price you expect. Thinly-traded ones can sit on your order ticket for days. Buy one or two shares of a liquid name just to see the full flow: order placement, settlement, confirmation.

4. Watch — don't trade — for a few days

Use the BRVM site or your broker's mobile app to follow the day's winners and losers. Note which sectors move together. You'll start to recognise the rhythm of the market by the end of the week.

5. Ignore the Telegram tips

Anonymous tipster channels on Telegram and WhatsApp are not research. They are noise, and at worst they are pump-and-dumps. If someone recommends a specific stock in a hurry, assume they already own it and want you to push it up for them.

6. Pick one topic to study per week

Start with dividends, then P/E ratios, then sector rotations. One topic a week is sustainable. Our Investing Basics course walks through all three with examples from the BRVM.
